Roger Byard AC PSM is an Emeritus Professor of Pathology at The University of Adelaide and was a Specialist Forensic Pathologist at Forensic Science SA for 3 decades. After qualifying in medicine he undertook 5 years of clinical practice including Flying Doctor work in the Northern Territory and training and qualifying in family practice, as well as studying physical and medical anthropology in Canada.

He has an interest in academic forensic research and has published over 1,000 peer-reviewed papers and 12 textbooks. He is an alumnus of 6 universities: the University of Tasmania, The University of Adelaide, the University of South Australia (Australia), McMaster University, the University of Toronto and the University of Ottawa (Canada). In addition to his basic medical and other post graduate qualifications Professor Byard has three higher doctorates: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Science (DSc).

He became a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for “eminent service to medicine, to forensic pathology, to tertiary education as an academic and researcher, and to the community” in June 2025. That year he was also ranked by ScholarGPS (ID 29056650139391) as number 1 globally in both Forensic Science and in Medical Jurisprudence as well as being recognised as a Highly Ranked Scholar (Lifetime) in all fields “in recognition of exceptional productivity, noteworthy impact and quality of scholarly work in the top 0.05% of 30 million scholars worldwide.”
