Violence can have consequences that extend far beyond the immediate incident. Survivors often face physical injury, trauma, financial difficulties, disruption of education or employment, social isolation and prolonged legal processes.
NAVYA works towards a survivor-centred approach, helping individuals understand their rights and, where appropriate, facilitating access to relevant legal, medical, mental-health, rehabilitative and social support.
Our understanding of rehabilitation goes beyond treatment. It includes the possibility of rebuilding education, livelihood, independence, confidence and participation in society.
Specialised Focus — Acid Attack Survivors: NAVYA has particular research and field experience concerning acid attacks, survivor rights, rehabilitation and access to justice. For more than 14 years, Dr. Navpreet Kaur has been engaged in research, advocacy and rehabilitation concerning acid attacks and has interacted with survivors and their families. Our work examines the long-term legal, medical, psychological, social and economic challenges faced by survivors and contributes to survivor-centred support, research and policy advocacy.
Update: In Shaheen Malik vs. Union of India, NAVYA's application for impleadment before the Supreme Court of India was allowed, along with a draft survivor-centric policy framework for acid attack survivors prepared by Dr. Navpreet Kaur, addressing prevention, protection, rehabilitation and access to justice.
